A Brief History 1960 - 2010
The Consecration of the Old Esthameians Lodge, No. 7693 took place at Chingford Masonic Hall on 7th March, 1960. The ceremony was conducted by the R.W. Provincial Grand Master, Rev. Canon R. Stafford Morris, M.A., assisted by Provincial Officers.
There had been serious planning in the 1930’s towards setting up a Lodge connected with the East Ham Grammar School and the Old Esthameians Society. While there had been a number of qualified Masons involved, only two key names can be traced back in history – those of John May and John Weir. However, following the death of John Weir, it was left to John May to take forward the proposal. As such, following the Consecration Ceremony, W. Bro. John May, P.A.G.D.C., was installed as first Master of the Old Esthameians Lodge, No. 7693.
Among the many events that influenced the Lodge as it grew was the decision to change it’s status from “closed” to “open”. This in itself was due to a number of factors, including potential initiates coming through the ranks of the old boys moving away to further their education and careers. Thus the decision was made to allow non-school members to join the lodge, but with the understanding that the order of preference would be true Old Esthameians first.
As in life, the Lodge has enjoyed good times as it has endured bad times but it would be quite wrong to suggest that doom and gloom prevail. Far from it! The Lodge has a buoyant membership and receives enthusiastic support from our visitors, whose company we welcome and richly enjoy.
So, the Old E’s has reached another milestone. The first twenty-five years were the years of consolidation and the second twenty-five years were years of growth in both standing and influence. The challenge now is to maintain what we have achieved, learn from our history, and carry on the vision of W. Bro. John May, P.A.G.D.C. first Master of the Old Esthameians Lodge No. 7693.
